Why Can't I Download TikTok Videos? (Fixes)
Published March 22, 2026
If you're hitting a wall trying to save a TikTok video, the cause is usually one of these seven things.
1. The Creator Disabled Downloads
TikTok gives creators a toggle to turn off the "Save video" button. When it's off, you won't see it in the share menu at all. This is probably the most common reason.
The workaround: GetTikVideo can still download these videos as long as the video itself is public. It pulls from a different source than the in-app save button.
2. The Video Is Private
If the creator set their video to "Friends only" or "Only me," no third-party tool can reach it. Not GetTikVideo, not anything else. The video simply isn't available outside TikTok's private feed.
Your only option here is to ask the creator to send it to you directly or make it public.
3. The Video Was Deleted
Dead link. If the creator took the video down, the URL stops working. Sometimes there's a brief window where the file is still cached, but don't count on it.
4. Region Restrictions
Some content is geo-locked due to music licensing or local regulations. You might be able to see a video that someone shared with you, but the download endpoint returns nothing because TikTok blocks it in your country.
A VPN could help, though using one may go against TikTok's terms of service.
5. Bad Link
This happens more than you'd think. The URL got truncated when you pasted it, or the link format isn't supported (some third-party apps generate weird URLs that don't resolve properly).
Go back to TikTok, open the actual video, tap Share → Copy Link. Use that fresh link.
6. Network or Server Problems
Could be your Wi-Fi, could be TikTok's servers. If TikTok itself is loading slowly or timing out, the download tools won't work either since they depend on TikTok being reachable.
Give it a few minutes and retry. If you're on mobile data, switching to Wi-Fi (or the other way around) sometimes clears things up.
7. TikTok Changed Something
TikTok updates their backend regularly. When they change how video URLs resolve or how authentication works, third-party tools need time to catch up. GetTikVideo uses multiple extraction methods as fallbacks, so outages are usually short. But if you hit one, try again in a couple hours.
Still Stuck?
Run through this checklist:
- Clear your browser cache.
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox).
- Double-check the URL starts with tiktok.com or vm.tiktok.com.
- If nothing works, send us a message with the URL and we'll look into it.
